What Is Volumetric Weight? A Practical Shipping Guide

October 15, 2026

Volumetric weight converts a package’s outside dimensions into a weight used for pricing. It helps account for the space a shipment occupies, even when the contents are light. For services that compare actual and volumetric weight, the higher figure generally forms the weight basis for charging. Always confirm the service’s formula, rounding and minimum-charge rules.

Actual weight, volumetric weight and chargeable weight

A lightweight item in a large protective case can therefore have a higher pricing weight than its scale reading. Ask for both the measurements used and the calculation basis when comparing quotations.

A worked example using a divisor of 5,000

For services that use centimetres and a divisor of 5,000, calculate length × width × height ÷ 5,000. Consider one packed carton measuring 60 × 40 × 40 cm and weighing 12 kg on the scale:

Under that illustrative comparison, 19.2 kg is the higher figure before the service’s rounding, minimums or other pricing terms are applied. DHL Express publishes a 5,000-divisor example; this does not establish the formula for every US2Asia route, airline, sea-freight service or courier.

How should you measure the package?

Measure after the goods are fully packed. Record the external dimensions and gross weight of every carton, pallet or crate, keeping the units consistent. Product dimensions alone leave out the space used by the shipping packaging. DHL’s box-measurement guide also stresses measuring the exterior.

Send package-level measurements rather than only a shipment total. Ask how the service handles irregular shapes, pallet footprints and multiple packages. If packaging changes after a quotation, provide the final measurements before booking.

Can repacking reduce volumetric weight?

Reducing unnecessary empty space may reduce the measured volume, but the packaging still needs to protect the cargo. Ask for a packaging assessment before removing cushioning or changing a fitted case. A smaller package is useful only if the proposed protection and handling arrangement remain suitable.

Frequently asked questions

Is the divisor always 5,000?

No. Confirm the divisor, measurement units and charging method for the exact service. Do not apply an express-parcel example automatically to road, air freight, sea freight or another carrier.

Do I pay for actual weight plus volumetric weight?

In a higher-of comparison, the two figures are compared rather than added. Other fees may still apply, so ask for the complete pricing breakdown.

What happens if I use product dimensions instead of carton dimensions?

The quote may be based on too little space. Provide the final packed external dimensions so the pricing assessment reflects what will actually be transported.

Is 19.2 kg always billed as exactly 19.2 kg?

No. The example shows the arithmetic only. Billing increments, rounding, minimum charges and service terms must be confirmed with the quotation.
